Eddie Samples Jr.
Ed Samples was born on January 31, 1921. He started racing professionally at the age of 19 out of Atlanta, Georgia. At the age of 25 he won the 1946 National Stock Car Championship, out pointing some of the greatest drivers in stock car racing history.
In 1947, he was runner-up in the same national point standings. In 1948 he won the South Carolina Stock Car Point Championship, and in 1949, for the second time he won the National Stock Car Point Championship. At the start of the 1950 racing season, he was nearly fatally injured in a race at Atlanta, Georgia. He came out of semi-retirement to win the 1954 Birmingham, Atlanta Racing Club Point Championship. He again won this title in 1955 and then retired from racing to become a successful businessman.
Ed Samples was the first driver to ever sit on the pole for a stock car race at the Old Jacksonville Speedway on Lenox Avenue. He won several feature events there in the early years, and set several qualifying track records at Jacksonville Speedway. He also set a track qualifying record at the Famed Old Daytona Beach Road Course event. Ed dies of a heart attack on June 10, 1991. He was a legend in his time and will be remembered as one of the all time great drivers in stock car racing history. Ed and his wife Virginia had two children, Ed Jr., and Shelia.
Ed was inducted into the Jacksonville Stock Car Racing Hall of Fame in 1996.
