Frank Brantley
Frank was born November 10, 1930 in Statesboro, Georgia. He drove his first race car in late 1954 at Oglethorpe Speedway in Savannah, Georgia, a 1940 Ford flathead Coupe. He never kept account of how many races he won, but he remembers winning the 1962 championship trophy at Oglethorpe Speedway and being the high point champion at the Old Jacksonville Speedway in 1965.
Frank raced at almost all the tracks in the southeast and won many races in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. One of the highlights of his career came in May 1971, when Frank drove to victory in the Dover Downs NASCAR Diamond 250 at Dover Downs, Delaware in the Grand American Challenge Series. He won the race in a driver uniform borrowed from the late Tiny Lund.
Some of Frank’s fondest memories are the late 1960’s and 1970’s, when he won 20 plus races in one season at the Old Jacksonville Speedway on Lenox Avenue, driving for Speedy Spiers. He also won many races driving his own car and a car owned by Robert Kea and Butch Klein. In 1976, Frank tried his hand at promoting racing at Oglethorpe track in Georgia, but he went back to driving the next season.
Frank and his wife Marie live in Statesboro, Georgia. Frank has 4 grown children, Janie, Lynette, Diane, and Frank, Jr.
Frank was inducted into the Jacksonville Stock Car Racing Hall of Fame in 1995.
