David Ezell
David was born on June 19, 1928 in Largo, Florida and moved to Jacksonville when he was 13 years old. He started racing when he was 18 in 1946 by making a race car out of his street car and then had to take the bus to work. He raced 3 years before winning a feature race, He then went on to win over 50 trophies and many championships at Jacksonville Speedway and throughout Florida and Georgia.
One year, in Macon, Georgia, David and Tommy Moon were both driving cars owned by E. L. Herrin. They were leading the race 1st and 2nd when somehow they spun out and ran head on, and ended up with no money and Pop Gilhousen, who never got in a rush, circled the track and stayed out of everyone’s way, won the $50.00 appearance money. Mr. Herrin never let them forget it.
In 1955 David was offered a Ford factory ride, but accepting it would mean traveling four or five months a year and he had only been married two or three years, so he declined it. He continued to race for the next thirty years until he quit after winning a 100 lapper in Brunswick, Georgia.
David has two daughters, Betty Louise and Janet, one son, David Wayne, who also has been a stock car racer but quit because of his job. David was a mechanic for the city of Jacksonville and a champion bass tournament fisherman in his spare time. He also likes to travel in his motor home with an RV Club. David resides on the Westside of Jacksonville.
David was inducted into the Jacksonville Stock Car Racing Hall of Fame in 1991.

Any chance David had a brother or cousin that raced at New Smyrna around the same era?
