Morris Joseph Herbert
Morris was born February 21, 1936 in Jacksonville, Florida. He attended his first stockcar race in 1948, and decided that one day he was going to drive a racecar. Several years later in the mid 1950’s, he got his chance. While his friend, Herb Spivey was away in the army, Carter Howell, owner of the racecar Herb drove, gave Morris his first ride in a racecar. Not too gracefully, Morris wound up in second place at Jacksonville Speedway’s weekly event.
Morris and Shirley McLon built a 1937 Ford sedan, #166, with a Ford flathead V/8 engine. Morris drove this car and racecars for Jimmy Strickland in the late 1950’s with much success. Morris always liked pretty racecars. He painted and lettered quite a few cars for other owners and they carried the words “Morris did it” on their trunk lids. He also built race engines for other car owners to help finance his racing habit.
Morris was shop foreman at Genuine Auto Parts machine shop until his retirement. Morris and his wife Barbara, reside on the Northside of Jacksonville and he still enjoys racing.
Morris was inducted into the Jacksonville Stock Car Racing Hall of Fame in 1998.
