Clayton Norton

Clayton was born April 8, 1938 in Jacksonville, Florida. At the age of 14 he enjoyed many races at Jacksonville Speedway on Lenox Avenue, perched high in his favorite tree or sitting in a home made grandstand across the street from the back stretch looking over the fence, this is where Clayton fell in love with the sport of stock car racing.

He started hanging around Wally Master’s and Red Moore’s garages. Then he started helping Pee Wee Hornsby on his car. In 1955 he went to work for Pat Patrick, owner of the famous #16 car driven by David Ezell. He traveled with them to many tracks around Florida, Georgia and South Carolina helping them work on this car. Some of his fondest memories are the #16 car winning 30 races in one season at Jacksonville Speedways ¼ mile track. Clayton kept the Jacksonville Speedway and Waycross Speedway tracks up for several years. At one time, he graded them with an antique motor less grader pulled by a truck.

Clayton managed the news releases for Jacksonville Speedway to the Florida Times Union paper, National Speed Sport News, Action News Racing of Florida, local radio and television coverage. He also was a public relations man for Jacksonville Speedway lining up special races like the Jacksonville Jaycee events. He contacted many famous drives such as, Bobby Allison, David Pearson, Benny Parsons, Net Jarrett, Curtis Turner, and many more to race at these events. He did a lot of behind the scene work for Jacksonville Speedway. In 1984, Clayton retired from racing. He and his wife Carol, resided in Jacksonville, They have one daughter, Lydia. Clayton passed away in 2009.

Clayton was inducted into the Jacksonville Stock Car Racing hall of Fame in 1996.
